What is this pink root-like object that a squirrel dug out of our plant pot?

I now think it is a magnolia seed pod which the squirrel has nicked from the house next door.
It is approx 5 inches end to end and 1 1/2 inches wide at the widest point.Mmany thanks for your replies.

Surprise, surprise ! My wife observed a squirrel in our garden this afternoon 17.10.15 , with another magnolia seed pod. The squirrel dissected the pod and buried the individual seeds in little holes which it dug in our lawn.

Don't know what it is but it looks more like some fruiting body that the squirrel was trying to bury in your pot.

Agree with Kennyboy. That is the seed pod from a Paeony.

That doesn't look like a paeony seed pod to me, either tree paeony or the herbaceous kind.

Alright then, it could be the seed pod from a Magnolia, bit dried up , but certainly a seed pod.
