I went to a friend's recently and his potted Daphne was in full flower in his protected garden, smelling divine. What am I doing wrong as mine looks such a sad specimen

It looks too dry to me. Unless it a species of Daphne that should be kept as a house/greenhouse plant then it would be much better in the garden. In our exposed garden we grow Daphnes in the open ground so that they are subject to all weathers.
