I have had a plant in my garden for about 15 years and it has never flowered. There are similar plants in neighbouring gardens. This year it has flowered and everyone is puzzled why it should happen now. I have sent 2 pictures. What is the plant please?

Its a phormium commonly called a new Zealand Flax. They flower when the weather conditions have been ideal.

And is it monocarpic, Sbg? A lot of similar New Zealanders are.

No, phormiums will carry on for years. I used to have two, one that flowered every year, and one that only flowered once in its life.

For some reason, it seems a superb year for Phormium flowers.....they've been superb.

To all those who have answered about my Phormium question, thanks very much. It will make a few very people happy now they know what they are dealing with.
