Compost heap and juicer.
I got a juicer for mothers day but since putting the leftovers in my compost bin, this now has sadly changed from a beautiful worm riddled and slowly cooking treasure into a sodden cold heap of smelly rubbish, swarming with flies and not one worm to be seen anymore.
How best to rectify please please? Oh and the leftovers now go in the green council bin.

Maybe just too much 'green' stuff? I always add ripped up eggboxes to my kitchen waste, & try to put small twigs etc in the compost bin ( haven't got a shredder unfortunately).

The high content of acid in the fruit will deter the worms and the sugar will attract fruit flies.

You need to keep the ratio of fruit low, not too much of it and make sure it's mixed together well.

Thank you Cornishsally, but what a coincidence...i just sent you a pm!
I add eggboxes too and shredded paper n twiggs but the stuff from the juicer, twice juiced, is probably too moist for my bin to cope with, sadly
Thank you Myron, i will keep that in mind and just add very small quantities in future.
Interesting about the fruitflies being attracted to the sugar, i never gave that a thought, but stands to reason.

Myron's right about the sugar levels - and that's just what's left in what you throw out, the sugar levels in the juice you've made and drink are absolutely sky-high... one small glass a day only, Resi;-))

;-)) one small pintglass???
In my defense though Bamboo, half to a third
of it consists of veggies.

Still full of sugar - you'd be suprised how much sugar is in veggies too, carrots particularly... sorry, I shouldn't be diverging into health matters here, but it's one of my pet soapbox rants - we just don't realise how much sugar we're getting from smoothies and juices, think its healthy. I can't say I realised either until they said I'd got fatty liver a few years back, even though I don't drink - I stopped all juices and smoothies, reduced my fruit intake generally, and 2 years later, liver back to normal. The doc said something to me that brought it home - you'd never eat all the fruit and veg you put in your juicer in one sitting, possibly not even a day, normally. When you eat whole fruit, the skin and tissues with it slow down the sugar absorption in the gut, which obviously doesn't happen with juices - that's the stuff you bin.
Shame, cos they do taste lovely, specially smoothies... the world's become full of things I can't have!

Its called getting older Bamboo, and it isn't funny is it?

Hi, I agree, getting old is not for wimps, they say life begins at 40, well yes it does, unfortunately, it begins to go downhill, I've been going downhill now for 26 years, lol, and I don't particularly want to go any further, Derek.

i've had a similar problem with my compost bin this year: . .first time in 19 years. The only change I made was including onions into the mix. No worms were in evidence and so now I've gone back to 'no onions' as my worm farmer friend advised me many years ago. i suspect that onions contain lots of sugar too.

It's not that the worms don't like sugary food, it's the high acid foods they don't like. They wont eat onions or garlic, but they love tomatoes. They won't eat the seeds though, so if you compost tomatoes the seeds will remain in the compost. Probably another reason why you shouldn't put fruits in a compost bin.

Derekm and Stera: no, its no fun, and no, I don't want to go any further down the slippery slope of age - but its probably marginally better than the alternative...;-))

Hi Bamboo, yes, that's the trouble, there isn't a lot going for the alternative :-), just have to carry on regardless, Derek.

Ah well, on we go then, if I can remember where I was going...
