Hi all.
I have a hanging basket which is a mass of flowering petunias. Absolutely delighted, best I've ever done. In 2 weeks will be off on hols, a neighbour is looking after watering for me. The problem id deadheading, mentioned it to my non-gardenning nbour who looked at me blankely!! To be fair it would probably take too much of his time anyway. I'm thinking of deflowering and pruning the trusses. The theory being that by the time we come back there will lots of new buds and blooms!! What do you think?

I don't think it would matter for two weeks.

You could take off the ones that are in full bloom now, but I tend to agree with Steragram.

I cut mine back last year, before going on holiday,in the heat of last summer, and it worked well.A shame to take off all the lovely flowers, but I had a lovely new display when I got home :o).

My advice would be to just ask the neighbour to water them for you.....every day if he/she is able....and when you come home assess the situation. If they look poor cut them right back and you will find within 2 or 3 weeks they will come back and flower again. I did this some years ago and had wonderful flowers again. Don't worry and enjoy your holiday.

I think its a bit much to expect deadheading unless they are a keen gardener. I tend to dead head just before I go away, but I always leave a few small buds so as not to totally confuse the plant!

If you mean surfinia petunias, been growing those for years, and I never deadhead them - they carry on flowering just fine, so long as they're watered and fed sufficiently.

Thanks for all the comments. Perhaps my concerns were a bit OTT. It's just that there are masses and I mean MASSES of flowers and I didnt fancy the thought of deadheading on an olympic scale when we returned home!! Happy now about what to do .....cancel the hols! Thanx again happy gardening.
