I have 2 Orangeola Japanese Maples for 10 years. The leaves turned red in Nov 2013 but did not fall off all winter. As of March 2014, they are still on both trees and are brown. Why haven't they fallen off like have done the past 10 years? There are no buds on either tree but it is only late March here in Chicago, Il. Thank you for any help.

Often that can mean the normal process (abscission) hasn't happened, and I have found that the tree is in decline. However, check for the new buds, and if they're healthy (probably red on your plants), then you should be ok, and the leaves will drop when the new ones emerge. The mild winter here left a lot of dead leaves on the trees.
