My tulips in pots outside my house appear to have been deliberately cut, all of them, and the blooms thrown on the ground. In every case there is what appears to be a clean cut about 3 inches below the flower. Before I assume this is deliberate vandalism, could this damage have been caused by high winds? The flowers appear undamaged, no petals blown off. However we did have winds of up to 30mph a couple of days ago. Every single bloom is affected in this way.

Hi, welcome to GoY, I think if it was wind damage, the leaves would have been looking a bit tatty, and I don't think they would all have a clean cut in exactly the same place, it sounds more like deliberate vandalism to me, probably someone a bit jealous of your display, Derek.

Do bunnies have access to your garden? I ask because a couple of years ago I noticed love-in-a-mist being chopped about half way up and the culprit was a rabbit.

I've known birds ( starlings ) to peck flowers off in this way , tho' why they do it I've no idea.

I lost some of the flowers on my alliums in this way, I think it was either mice or squirrels.

Birds, sadly, who will nip off he flower heads...

I get the same with a climbing rose - blooms snipped neatly off. It's really annoying! Grrrr....why do they do it? It HAS to be birds in my case, doesn't it.

Wow, I am astonished to read you very knowledgeable ladies saying with confidence that this is bird damage! I never would have thought it! Must admit, I really hope it WAS birds and not a very unpleasant neighbour! What a terrible disappointment for you Boxheater. Planting bulbs is not a fun job, and we only do it because it brings such a wonderful, and portable display in the spring. :( sad.

Cottagekaren "Planting bulbs is not a fun job"? Better not visit Bulba and I then we unpot and repot all our flowering size bulbs every year…

I planted 9 tulip bulbs in a pot and only one has grown. There isn't an iota of the other bulbs left and I think a mouse has eaten them.

Mouse or the furry tailed grey vermin.
