when you get new growth it will start as little spikes from the ground for want of a better word.bamboo of all sorts is a very tough resilliant plant and you have to do something pretty bad to kill it . infact it is quite hard to get rid of if you dont want it .just feed it and give plenty of water and it should be fine .you could even cut out some of the stems to make the plant put more energy into new shoots,roots etc .
