my old large stag has fallen can i just place it in fork of tree or does it have to attached to branch?

Stagshorn tree possibly but reading again, stags horn fern does sound right.

If it is a fern try putting some leafmould in the fork first and somehow attach the plant so it doesn't blow off while its attaching itself again. Good luck.
