my aquilegia are very leafy but covered in mildew, should I cut them down to ground level or just leave them as they will die off anyway come winter

For me I would cut them down to ground level....next year they will be fine.

I had the same problem and cut mine back weeks ago, and now I have lovely fresh new leaves

I just leave them, mildewed and not, until they have died off and then tidy. The mildew does not seem to do any harm.
