I called into Cannington walled garden and picked up this unlabelled Veronica.

I was a bit dismayed to be told that the students don't have time to label up all the cuttings they take!

So one flower spike is multi, though all the others are single stemmed. I have included the foliage old and young.

Over to you which one is it? thanks.

Don't know what the Veronics is, Sbg, but I am shocked that the students are not made to 'find the time' to label up ALL cuttings, and anything else.

yes me too. I did suggest that was part of their education. She said they made too many mistakes. It is such a shame as they had lots of lovely plants.

Not labelling plants is a serious crime.
The students should be put in detention.
Don't have time? Pah!

4 Aug, 2013

Their work should be checked. They should be made
to rewrite wrong labels. How will they ever learn?

Oh, the youth of today ! Mention some obsure pop
group and they know all the wordage they sing into
their microphones.

I don't blame the students for this, it is the educators who seem to be at fault here for not instilling the importance of labeling in the students.

Does it really take that long to stick a label in a pot?

4 Aug, 2013

Have to agree with Mr B here, its not always the ones learning at fault, just easier to blame them, trouble is it happens at all stages, the times my grandchildren have worked darned hard to finish and hand in a project on time only to have it ignored as teacher hasn't the time to do all the marking, hows that s'posed to encourage the youngsters for the future when they move on to further education in whatever field they choose..

4 Aug, 2013

I agree but does anyone know what it is?

4 Aug, 2013

Nope!!! Sorry.
Btw, what and where is Cannington walled garden?

4 Aug, 2013

Duh!!! sorry Seaburn forgot to say I cannot help with identification but always check the pages as I've learnt so many names through someone else's queries, plus it winds me up when all young ones get called lazy and suchlike, some work darned hard...

Its down in a village/small town called Cannington. Its part of the old priory and is now part of the Bridgwater college and an RHS partner garden. Bridgwater in Somerset is about 5 miles from Spritzhenry. I had a couple of days away from home and went to see her and her amazing garden. There is a blog in there somewhere :o)

Agreed, Lincslass - very many work darned hard.

4 Aug, 2013

yep many students work very hard and so do many teachers.

4 Aug, 2013

Indeed.

It looks as though it's a V. longifolia type. But, I'd wait on that flower first.

Seems to me grandparents can help their children more
by setting up monitoring schemes, so everyone in the family, or friends, can read the childrens' work, even if the teachers dont do it. Praise can be a great help.

At the new school behind me in their break time the
teachers are either outside the gate, or in their cars -
smoking fags ! Its the talk of the neighbourhood.

teachers arn't allowed to smoke on school premises so if its their break why not? Bet some of the parents still subject their kids to their smoke. Bit hypocritical really. [no I'm not a smoker but I did watch/nurse my dad as he died of lung cancer 20 yrs ago ]

I'm a very proud and helpful grandparent, always read the childrens work and have always encouraged and praised them and yes helped if needed, my grandson does a lot of his projects at my house still and always asks us to read his work, his sister has always done the same and they do value our opinion, I've attended open evenings, sports events, concerts and been helping out on the school run and lots of occasions for over 11yrs, my grandaughter is starting sixth form in September so is of an age whereby she doesn't need me on standby now but I'm still on duty for grandson who is only 12yrs old, their Mum works out of the town whereas I'm only 10mins walk away from the school..
Yes the teachers have to leave the school if they are smoking in our town, as long as they carry an ashtray and do not throw the nub on the floor, I say good for them, as S' burn says its their break, as do the shop assistants, hospital staff and anyone enjoying a pint in their local, in fact its a wonder they haven't tried to stop smoking in ones garden..
Our ancestors were responsible for so many of our sins of today, its a wonder we have survived, must point out that my grandparents idea of grandchildren was that the child only spoke when asked a question, sat outside on the step and only ever visited them when asked too, they would never have dreamt of sitting down to play with us or even been remotely interested in homework or whether we were happy at school, they loved us though, it was just the way things were in those days, I prefer todays grandparents way, we share in their lives...

brill if grandparents are around. neither of my girls had grandparents and come to think of it nor did I. I have no complaints re their teachers or mine and i'm going back more years than I care to mention. There are good and bad in all walks of life.

but still no confirmed plant id. :o(

As a grandparent I would have like more involvement with the grandsons but, with Dad in the military -just retired, they moved around in distant places and have now holed up in Yorkshire, which they love - we are in north Scotland. We get to see them occaisionally, like the week after next, but that is the way things are. My parents lived in S. Yorks and I moved my family from London to Scotland, that is how it seems to be nowadays.
