I have a very prickley bush with small leaves red and silver that's suddenly lost most of its leaves whats gone wrong

Could be but the berberis I know have green leaves not red and silver.

Berberis 'Helmond Pillar' used to do that for me when it got dry at the root. But as MG, says, a photo will help

Isn't there a red leaved one with silvery edges? There's one called Gold Rim that might looks silvery.
