Hello this is a photo of a plant I have. Its a perennial Wallflower Bowles Mauve. The books say I should cut it back in April to avoid it going woody. Should I cut it right down to where the woody stem start or should I leave a bit of greenery on it? Would really appreciate some advice as my bees loved this plant last year and I'm trying hard to keep plants that are good for them.

I would cut it back by about half after it's finished flowering. You should then get some good summer growth ready for next years flowers.

I would cut it back by about half too and from July onwards take cuttings as I find this one gets very woody, straggly and has fewer flowers after 3-4 years. The early cuttings I leave outside but later ones I over winter.

I, too, take cuttings and replace the main plant every 3 or 4 years. It never seems to stop flowering so there's no opportunity to prune it without cutting off lots of flowers, which no one likes to do!!
