It's that time of year again....

My peonies are just begining to starting to peep out of the ground and this year I want to be ahead of the game with them as they shoot up before I usually can get the ring supports around them. The ring supports I have used in the past are not too effective as I find, stems shoot way high above them and then end flopping right over, with flowers not far off the ground.

Maybe I haven't bought the right sized ring supports. Could any one recommend any good ones please.

I saw some yesterday which have a central hole into which you insert a cane. As the plant grows, you can slide the ring support up the cane - I don't know how easy this would be. I have to admit that I put three or four canes around the peony and loop green twine around them, then extra levels as necessary. Not the prettiest, but the twine is camouflaged by the foliage. I shall watch other responses with vested interest.

That sounds interesting, thanks for that one, I shall look out for that! Your own idea doesn't seem too bad,as last year I ended up with several canes supporting individual stems which wasn't a good look as the canes weren't green.....Could only find packs of the beige ones - they stood out like 'a sore thumb'.

My ring supports were only about 18" in height which seem pointless

I was looking with the exact purpose of finding something to support peonies, but sheer inertia left me undecided. Especially as the canes /twine method has always worked.
I have to confess, though, that I used bamboo!

I have the same problem with Delphiniums,as they get so tall..I used canes, which looked horrible last year, and didn't support as well as I hoped..I might invest in a couple of those obelisk types, and make sure I get them in place, well before the growth gets going...like anytime now,as they are appearing through the soil..although I don't think they would be suitable for Peonies with being tall but narrow..blinking expensive too,but they should last well, and look better ..

I use half circle plastic coated galvanised steel border restraints, putting 2 or 3 around each peony plant. They come in different heights and if taken in and stored over winter, last for years. Monty Don showed how to make them on the Gardeners' World programme but you can also buy them - I've seen them on the Harrods Horticultural website. They work very well and can easily be moved to other plants when the peony has finished flowering. I also use the 'Y' stakes which are useful for propping plants up when I've forgotten to put the stakes in early enough!

I to use bamboo canes on my Peonies along with green twine .

Thinking now, that the Bamboo canes probably look a lot better when arranged around the plant in a square/circle with the supporting twine. Unlike silly me, who in the end, had to prop up every stem with a cane - lol!!!!!

Jaykatay, Thanks,I shall check those ones out! What are Y stakes?

Good luck with your Delphs, Bloomer.

Best support I find for peonies is those grid shaped ones. You can push them right down a couple of inches above the shoots. As they grow taller you can raise the height. They come in various sizes and I find the ones with the longest stakes are ideal for the tallest such as Sarah Bernhardt.
The secret is getting the support, whatever it maybe be in early enough.

Scottish, those sound good! - where did you buy those grid type ones, I haven't seen those at my local GC's? I have several Sarah B's which are the most difficult to support.

Most of the national stores selling them. A round hoop gridded with squares. 3 supports which push into the ground. I found a few at Gardening Scotland a few years back which are bigger than I've seen in the stores. The stakes are around 50cm - a good height for Sarah. Would you like me to take a picture so you can see what they look like?
