Bamboo canes bird perching station ... Not a question, but just want to share an idea with everyone. This is a structure of canes tied near-horizontally into a rose bush which has dropped its leaves. It is next to a variety of feeders and a small colony of house sparrows now seems to have adopted it permanently. Other birds also, tits, robins, dunnocks and finches use it. It has proved a massive hit with them, and demonstrates that birds in the garden not only need different foods provided for them, but importantly need somewhere to perch also. I've been amazed at how birds have responded to it, and now they literally teem outside my window to delight me.

nice one Jonathan '' ideal for the birds, but I think you will finde that the dunnocks will tend to get under the structor so a little food at there leval would be nice for them.

You're right about that Cliffo. But the little bits are always dropping from the feeders, so there's always plenty to peck up at ground level.

Well done Johnathan as you have used different sized bamboo canes as the size of the canes do matter for perching on for different size bird claws. If you had bird s in a cage they would advise for different birds different size perches. Lovely idea you have there.

Super idea, thank you! I have a trellis which turns a corner so I'm now going to put different sized canes across the angle of it. The trellis itself is too thick for the birds to perch on.

I wish you luck with that. I'll be very interested to learn how it works for other people and what results.

birds need to perch every night and lots of times in the day .it is a good idea.caged birds can suffer if you use the same size perches as they never move there toes as they dont have too causing like an arthritus desease .what makes realy good perches to is branches from fruit trees as they are safe for birds to chew on.
