These nasty looking grubs are about 1" long. They are monsters and I found them in the bottom of a pot of lilies. They are very active but the lilies have flowered reasonably well this year. Any idea what they might be please?

I hate to contradict you NP.....you know I wouldn't if I could help it. :o)
However, if these are 1" long then they aren't ladybird pupae. They look more like some kind of beetle larva. We have white grubs very similar to these only slightly bigger and even more ugly. They are the larval stage of the June beetle or Eauropean Chafer beetle. They could be some kind of Chafer but I don't know what you have over there.

are they lily beetle pupae as you say they were at the bottom of lily pots? dont know how big they are though. size of the pupa isnt an indication of adult size. just think about the leather jacket and its adult form.
def a beetle though.

Don't think it's lily beetle larva, as the larva of these live on the leaves and eat them.

I thought vine weevil larva until I read they were 1 inch long, which is twice the size. If there were only two of them, I wouldn't worry about it. Also, I wouldn't kill them as many beetles are beneficial in the garden.

Definitely look like Chafer grubs. The dark fat end to the body looks typical for these and the size is about right too.
