This a shrub, Snowberry or Waxberry, Symphoricarpos albus.

Thanks Bulbaholic, I found it in the hedge I share with my neighbour, it's mainly beech but there seem to be a few other things in there too, and I like to know what things are!

A suckering thug, so, be careful. I think I have managed to kill the 20 feet long row of it on the roadside outside our garden, using repeated doses of Roundup as soon as any leaves showed up.

We had an infestation of it at our last house. Don't encourage it whatever you do!

I HOPE I've managed to stop it spreading under the fence from next door!

Sounds like I should add it to my list of things that need to come out while they're still small then! Thanks :o)

I'm not certain, but when I had one,I was told the berries were poisonous..so as lots of childern ,including mine, walked past it to school,I got rid of it..

I looked it up on tinternet Bloomer and according to Wikipedia "Common Snowberry (S. albus) is an important winter food source for quail, pheasant, and grouse, but is considered poisonous to humans. The berries contain the isoquinoline alkaloid chelidonine, as well as other alkaloids. Ingesting the berries causes mild symptoms of vomiting, dizziness, and slight sedation in children." That did make me laugh as I know people who might like something that causes slight sedation in their children! But don't worry, I won't take any chances, it'll be coming out :o)

The pleasure of the slight sedation would be more than counteracted by the vomiting though...

It would give a whole new meaning,to the ones who 'throw a sickie' to get a day off school ! :o)

Now there's a ghastly image you've conjured, Bloomer, lol! Thug indeed, this plant, I'm still stuck with it where its rooted round the manhole...

It is poisonous but it is another example of the difference between 'poisonous' and 'harmful'.

White berries aren't that appealing to the eye and won't get confused with edible berries.

Plus, the taste is awful. I know.

Blimey, I hope you spat it out without swallowing, Poisongardener!

Perhaps you should rename yourself "Poisonedgardener"! Do you try all your plants?

19 Oct, 2012

Yes, I've tasted most of them and, Bamboo, I do spit.

That's a relief - I dunno whether you're brave or foolhardy even so!
