Why are my plums rotting as soon as they're ripe?

My plum tree has hundreds of plums on it but they are just rotting, sapping and shriveling before I can harvest them. Many are even rotten on one side before the other side is ripe. Is the tree diseased? Do I have a pest? Any ideas would be gratefully received.
