Could it be a Erysimum perennial wallflower? possibly does it have purple flowers - Erysimum 'bowles mauve'?

It's a Hellebore, just not sure of the variety. It's not unlike 'Fine Feathered Friend', but the leaves on that are a bit thinner.

If the leaves have an unpleasant smell then it is H. foetidus.

Thanks very much. You are all so helpful---it's like having Percy Thrower in the sitting room!

Definitely a hellebore. I get dozens of these in my garden for some reason (could be the birds!!) they get a sort of limey green flower on them and after that, I think they just self-seed!!

This Hellebore really comes into its own in Spring. The lime green flowers are really refreshing. Give it a shady spot and let it seed itself around.

Whilst I do think that it is H. foetidus you might just like to check this out ;-)
