When will I know that my garlic is ready?

United Kingdom Gb

First time last autumn I palnted garlic but despite looking up in books I'm confused as to when I should know that they are ready. Also, they have little bulbs at the end of the shoots, what does this mean. Would appreciate any thoughts. thanks

autumn garlics are normally ready for lifting at the end of july.the tops should have turned a pale colour and lean over.make sure you dry out the bulbs before storing, and any that are soft , use straight away or bin.

Thanks, but none of them have done this. They also have little bulbs at the end/top. Still confused.
