wilted leaved

On my japanese "moonlight" climbing hydrangea vine, some of the leaves are growing very well, and some have completely died. The vine itself looks pretty good. I just planted it last fall. Why are some but not all of the leaves dead? The dead ones, I think, are the ones that emerged earliest, and we did have a late frost.
