My dad loved his currant bush but the worms did too...every spring it was nearly defoliated before it had a chance to bloom and set fruit by some larva...have since figured out that it must have been sawfly...but he was always vigilant and picked off the worms...

Oh, so your garden doesn't get visited by cats, then, Deida? :-)

The neighbour's cat has decided that one corner of my garden is it's lavatory. Beastly thing. It's WC has moved from in front of the Hosta (I strategically placed the rose pruning harvest to move it on) to where I was planning to plant some solomons seal. Only trouble is if I move it on from there, it is sure to get in amongst the veggie seedlings, because the earth is soft and unguarded. Time to invest in a scarecrow water squirter, perhaps?

the hummingbirds' return to our area each spring, coincides with the blooming of the flowering currant. We just bought a small one esp for the hummers. Glad you mentioned the scent, - now I'll be sure to plant it a bit further away from the house :)
