When the flower spikes are finished do you just cut them off?

Yes, I have also taken cuttings to make new plants.

At the moment the tree is growing awkwardly, so we cut some branches off.

We also noticed where the exposed cuts are, some insect has bored into the centre, with piles of sawdust beneath, so I do not wont to lose it.

Thank you never thouggt if taking a cutting but its a good idea.
That is such a shame insects have got into it I shall have to watch out for that thank you for the warning.
