Campsis

siris

By Siris

Campsis (Campsis radicans)

The Campsis, which I grew from seed, flowers each year, but always at the top of the fence on its one stem. I have just looked up its pruning regime, and it advises to cut to ground level in Autumn. This is a visual reminder to do so.

That's a beauty siris. I've had one for twenty plus years and not so much as a sniff of a flower. Every year I say I'll dig it up and bin it but still haven't. I did move it last year and it still has done nothing so the green bin is going to be it's home very soon.

Got the seed in 2009 I think. Its in an east facing border. I was always wary about pruning, but am going to chop it to 12" in Autumn then hopefully train the new shoots horizontally so it flowers lower down. I have another under the carport in a tub which has never flowered, from the same pod. Actually there were three, but I 've divided off 2 of them and they are sitting in water waiting for a home.

I would go for it. I have a Akebia quinata that's never thrived, it's in a pot on the pergola, I feel it's time for a move.

I have one Sue it reaches the gutters we chop it off to about half each year before it blocks the gutter , it's in flower at the moment .. Dawn my Akebia Quinata is planted in the ground its massive covering the entire pergola in fact it looks to be too heavy for it, it sends out runners 6ft long all over the ground and then roots its self ....I regularly pull them up ....

I'm not Dawn Jimmy warned me not to have one ,I think he might have been right about that ... if you plant it in the ground it needs a massive construction to hold it up ,another job for John's list Lol ....

A beauty.

Mine is stuck to the 6ft fence by its own suckers. Concrete posts hold the fence up.

I read they don't like windy areas but like sun to shady. I ve just bought two wish I had nt knowing now they are vigourous.

I bought a campsis when we moved to the country...lots of room for it to spread, I thought. It didn't do well in the first spot I chose but I moved it to a foundation planting along with grape and Virginia Creeper... I thought I'd lost it as it was swamped by the VC, but found it later in the season and since it wasn't too rampant I didn't prune it. It's doing much better this year with more rain and it's trying to give the VC a run for it's money. no flowers yet...sigh, but it still lives!

We have a yellow Campsis which we have been trying to get rid of for years!! but it will not die! clings to our fence, despite being cut to the ground and dug out!will leave it now and see if it flowers, at least it will now have something to cling to, as we have added trellis to the new fence!! time will tell .....the neighbours plant reached his gutters, and this is a house not a bungalow!!

I am happy with mine, it's manageable at the moment. It surprises me how much later that some othe shrubs it starts to regrow each season.
