cacti surprise

a gardening friend rang me ans said i have to come over immediately.
when i arrived she showed me a cacti flower about to bloom.

so we had a cuppa coffee and waited a while and looked again

well it definitely liked us as it was putting its best petals forward

in a short while it was in full bloom and a bumble bee spotted it and thought that perfume is irresistible

so as it was getting near evening the perfume was almost overpowering
as near as i can describe it is when the kids get over enthusiastic with the toilet aerosol perfume but ever so much nicer.

the next day i visited again and all the flowers were out

she said that she found the cacti last year lying down in a friends yard where it had lain for a year so she rescued it and now it has repaid her kindness

Cacti have beautiful flowers. I used to watch mine opening and the perfume filled the garden. By morning they had all withered.

What lovely story, Piersdad.....I can relate to it as well. My late sister-in-law "rescued" a massive cactus out of a neighbour's skip one morning and it sat and sulked on her window-sill for months until she began to think she too would give it the heave.....at which point it put on the most marvelous display of buds which then went on to open up and fill her whole flat with perfume. She was thrilled to bits of course. I know nothing about cacti ..but she died shortly after it finished flowering and when her flat was cleared out a week or so later ....the cactus had died too!!

Amazing Piersdad...I never knew they opened that quickly!
I've always found with cacti that when you think they are on their last legs they suddenly surprise you with a shower of buds!
Thanks for showing us the pics...the bumble soon sniffed the fragrance out!!

my friend first realized that it was blooming when she wondered where the smell was coming from and when the second flower started she rang us up.
the pic with the bee in it will be one of my prize pics and have printed it out on some of my best paper for her.
she says the bumble bee has made many visits since.
the rest of her garden is nearly finished and looks already like a competition winner so that will be a future blog

What great photos, PD! I used to grow a small cactus in Spain that produced 100s of flowers every spring that were later followed by bright red seed capsules. I don't remember if they had any scent. It was very, very easy to propagate, you just took one on the small growths & put it in another pot & hey presto another cactus ready to sprout many dozens more!
