I'm so excited to have seen longtailed tit on my bird feeder this morning.
The bird didn't stay for long, but this was first ever time long-tailed tit has been spotted in my garden. :o)
Are their numbers on the increase ?

Thats great TT,very pleased for you..they are such lovely little birds.Did you only see the one bird, they usually come in small flocks. Yes I think their numbers are on the increase.. keep watching, they might come again

Yes, Deida, thanks.
I'll keep watching.
The long-tailed tit was on its own, but hopefully checking out territory for a whole flock. What do yours prefer to eat ?

nothing special TT just what I can afford ..few breadcumbs,Peanuts in the birdfeeder,or a coconut/halfed (fresh}..got a 2 pound of wild bird seeds last week for 60pence ,goes down a treat..thats it. Niger seeds was recommended by BB and Spitz.but too expensive.Sorry BB and Spits moost greatful for you advice..birds still are coming....bless them.sorry ..forgot the odd fatball

19 Feb, 2009

Deida...sorry,yes niger is expensive but goldfinches also like sunflower hearts.Have a suggestion which you could consider. If you get a packet of wild teazel (thistle ) seeds and sow them..they are perennials....goldfinches love the seeds from the flower heads. Will keep
an eye open for some for you if you like ! Would be gourmet food for free !

What a good idea BB,thanks for the tip..do you mean by sunflower hearts the sunflower seeds??

22 Feb, 2009

Yes Deida...you can can buy the hearts with out the husks on..Wilkos do them. The golfinches love them as they do not have to get into the seed husks. Not too expensive..but we going to try for planting teasels this year..food for free !
