Grasshopper (Taeniopoda eques)

Just saw this today on one of my plants. It was huge (3 1/2 inches long) I have never seen a black grasshopper before. Another first for me. Hope I don't see any more of them. They could strip my plants in no time flat.

Looks like he belongs on that black grass with purple flowers.

The common name is horse lubber grasshopper...my dog could almost throw a saddle on it and go for a wild ride....
