Tiny, baby skunk

Tiny, baby skunk

This little guy came up to me while I was digging early one morning. He stomped his feet at me. I carefully looked around for his mommy but she was nowhere around. Since we have some large dogs in the neighborhood which wander around in the morning, I put the little guy in a cage and carefully looked for his mom. Well, I smelled her pretty quick and she was dead on the main road into town. I didn't see any other babies so I came home and fed the little guy hamburger and cottage cheese. He gobbled it up and that was his diet along with cantalope. I mothered him but did not handle him for 4 weeks until he began to smell like a skunk then I knew he was ready for release so I called the wild life department and they sent someone to pick him up for release back into the wild. They said they had no problem. They just opened the cage door and he scampered away. They then brought me back my cage for my next wildlife adventure.

I hope you are rewarded for your kindness.

My reward was watching him eat and grow. I had never cared for any wild animal this young and I scrambled to the internet to find out what I should feed him. Thank heavens, there were many articles on the subject.

Way to go Skippy. He was probably watching you and made up his mind to get your attention by stamping his feet at you. Animals can sense kindness you know.

All of the kids around had to come see him quite often. He was pretty interesting to have around.

Congratulations on rearing the youngster.
Good to know you have the cage back.
I wonder what you'll rescue next time?

He's a sweet little critter, isn't he? Really makes you feel wonderful to be able to help turn a disaster into a survival story! Way to go Skippy!
