Dierama pulcherrimum

Dierama pulcherrimum

I would like to take credit for growing this magnificent Dierama pulcherrimum, but sadly I can’t..... It grows in a garden nearby. However, I have managed to obtain some seeds from it. I would dearly love to grown them on and eventually cultivate a magnificent plant as this...... Any suggestions on how I should go about it....... when do I sow the seeds? what type of soil would be best to start them off in? and what conditions to keep them in whilst germination takes place? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I stumbled upon GOY quite by accident yesterday morning and I’m so pleased that I did, I can already see how interesting it is going to be as well as providing a good source of gardening information in a fun way. What surprised me was within minutes of setting up my homepage, I received a welcome comment from Michaella...... Thank you Michaella, I really appreciated getting a response so soon.... and I was soon to discover what an active site GOY is when more comments quickly followed.

I am still finding my way around and I appreciated the comment from Ams directing me to the Questions Page. Yes folk, do give me a nudge if you spot anything else I need direction on.

Hello Hywel - As soon as I read the word ‘Blodyn’ I knew you had Welsh connections....... However, I take your point and I shall be using your Welsh name from the start Hywel!

Hello Leo - Thank you for the welcome. I note that you also live on the west side of UK and no doubt have been suffering too with relentless days of rain.

Hello Irish - Thank you for the welcome. I note on your profile that you are growing a selection of berry bushes. I’m very keen to grown blackberries and would welcome any suggestions you may have on what you consider a good variety to start off with. The hedgerows are a very poor source for blackberries this year with all this rain, they are simply rotting away.

Hi Chris - I have already taken a quick look at some of your stunning pictures and I intend to spent more time enjoying them. Gardening in Budapest..... that will be interesting to follow.

Thanks everyone for your welcome, you have made me feel at home already. Marion

I love these plants - I wish I had a suitable space to grow one in! Apparently, they are like Greta Garbo - "I want to be alone" and don't appreciate sharing their space!

A lovely photo of the Angel's Fishing Rods.
I grew my original plants from purchased seed, but that was so long ago I can't remember the germinating instructions. Next time you are in a garden centre, have a look for a packet!
As to growing them, mine are in a sheltered sunny sunken garden on poor sandy soil, just about as different conditions from yours as it is possible to get, I imagine. Here they self-sow readily if I don't cut off the rods as soon as the flowers have finished. This year I am also cutting all the leaves on some to ground level to see what happens, as the old leaves are scruffy to look at and very tough to pull off. Hope this helps.....
Sorry, Spritzhenry, I haven't been out to count, but there must be more than 6 plants in a bed only 5 by 7ft. so here they have to share and lump it. Perhaps that is why I get such prolific seed production!

Ah, well, I shall have to complain to the RHS magazine, as that's where I read the article about them! So experts, once again, are NOT always right. Hmmm. Where could I fit one in...

Actually I am new to GOY, also. I am also impressed with all of these wonderful members who are friendly and VERY funny. It has been a joy to communicate with everyone from various countries since I live in the USA. I do have ancestry ties to Ireland and England a few generations back.
