They do stay air borne for extended periods but I notice they will stop to sip a bit of nectar. lol

Not here. They fly while sipping the nectar in my mother's garden. I thought they only stopped to sleep. LoL

What varieties do you get out there GG?
In the east the only one we have is the Ruby throated. They will often sit and watch the feeder and chase off any others that come around.
