Backyard

The view from my backyard.

A whole lot more attractive than mine!

The gap in the trees was caused by a tree that got blown over in the property below mine. Now I can see some of the houses in Rahminho, and the sound from them (like dogs) carries up to my backyard. They are about 1 km away.

So, it's a lovely view but not so good for the sounds!

You seem very close to the sea, Wylie! Your view is much better than the one from our flat!

The quickest way to the sea is to go to the edge of the land that you can see and then straight down about 30 meters. When the sea is really rough because of the winds, I can hear the booming sounds of the waves crashing into the cliffs.

Must be quite scary - especially now with the rise of sea levels!

According to Google Earth, my house is 600 feet above sea level, so the sea would have to rise a lot to reach me. Or maybe I am on beach front property and don't know it.

Well you're a lot higher than we are here! We're only a couple of meters, at most, above sea level! The land around here is very flat as well though when the river that runs only 5 mins walk down the road from us floods it never comes anywhere near her as there is a lot of land on both sides of its banks to expand greatly.

I get the runoff from up the street. The village council has tried making drain holes in the rock walls, but the farmers don't like them because the runoff floods their fields so they block the holes. One year, a farmer way up the street was late planting and then harvesting his dent corn. This meant that the "grass" (in reality weeds that cows will eat) was late growing back and when the rain came, it washed all his top soil into the street. They had to bring in a bulldozer to clean the street and the following spring, trucks loaded with new soil so he could reseed the grass. We also have a lot of dry creeks and a large cascade in downtown Altares that is spectacular when it rains.

What a wonderful view. I hope the daylilies enjoy it! Although my main interest is hardy geraniums and erodiums, we do grow a lot of daylilies (over 100 cultivars) and enjoy that blast of mid-summer colour here in Ontario, when many of my geraniums are finished.

I can see 2 other islands from my backyard. There are over 900 daylilies growing and it is warm enough that they bloom almost all winter as well as in the summer.
