Yes Amy it has long prickles but they are not very sharp.
It flowers every year.

Thank you Balcony, it's just that I find many common names a bit silly :D

Something interesting I didn't know which I read on the link is that the male flowers are yellow and the female flowers dark red. Therefore this is a female plant.
