For SBG.... who brilliantly identified this fellow (Which I thought was a lizard.) Thanks .

Thanks for posting. Victoria thinks its wonderful but mentioned it oozes a toxic secretion from its skin. I don't suppose you licked it or didn't wash your hands after handling it :o)

I still think it is an amazing animal.

I also read that its skin can produce a powerful neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin. We handled him fearlessly as we were ignorant of the fact. Most articles recommend not touching it.

Very cool. Did you find him near water? Newts are agile swimmers. He'd make a nice addition. Are you going to name him? :)

in the uk most newts only go into water when they are ready to breed, preferring to live in the undergrowth. we get smooth newts in the garden here and I usually find them in the shrubbery where they feed on insects and small slugs.

I must admit I'd have picked it up too Klahanie, I am very much a hands on ecologist.

Whatever he is, he's fascinating.

Interesting, here they often forage along the bottom of streams & lakes capable of holding their breath for hours - true amphibians.

This is the first time I noticed it here, We have extremely dry summers and therefore few little snakes. We are surrounded by old forest so lots of dry shade but naturally damp spots (no sun) in the forest. Winters are extremely wet. Rains create pools which drain very slowly because of our clay soil but by June most water is gone. We don't have river or lake in close vicinity, just ocean. I have no idea how and why it decided to come or even live here. I hope to see it again. I do have a little "frog garden" under camellia tree with couple water dishes. We do have occasional frog here. Mainly tiny tree frogs but some little bigger too.
Do you have suggestion for name, Bathgate?

We've had a very dry summer too. The big thunder storms we normally get have been very few, but hurricane Delta made it here and it's been raining steadily for two days. We need it. Can't think of a name at the moment but I'm sure you'll think up something.
