Hi Bathgate, just found myself googling Fire Island ferries! Lots of interesting place names. Also, Fire Island itself, beautiful beaches and homes. Sounds quite unique.

It's a real retreat from the work a day life. So much to discover and explore. During the summer it's a destination hot spot for the rich and famous. All kinds of restaurants & entertainment and fabulous people to meet - and the beach os always there. No cars allowed on this island Kate - everybody is out and about.

Amy: lol yeh it will surely take you to that magical place - good luck getting back home - you'll feel like Dorothy.

Hi Amy: Fire Island is about 4-5 hours journey from Pennsylvania Station in New York. I would strongly recommend they wait for the summer season - between Memorial Day & Labor Day - May 25th & September 8th. The ferries only run on weekends until Memorial Day. Getting back is a trick. I came home on a freighter because I bribed the captain to please take me back with him. I got lucky. I was there visiting a friend who owns a house. I stayed with him. Normally, I would of had to wait until Saturday to go home. Everything opens up after Memorial Day. Now it's sort of a sleepy quiet place. They would have to take the Railroad from Penn Station to Sayville, then take a taxi to the Ferry. Last Ferry is at 2:45pm. They'd have to leave Penn Station 7am. Tell your grand daughter to wait for the season to open in Summer. Then the ferries run all day, every day and she can use the beach and meet all the fabulous people and the night life and everything the place has to offer. It's like a tropical island in the Summer time.
