That's a beautiful flower! I though it was a hibiscus flower.

lol I thought that too for a second at first. This must be a new cultivar. I've never seen it before. I love it's big bold colorful blooms.

Yes, I've never seen one this color before. This is another plant that doesn't do too well here. It's grown in the middle of winter. I've tried them before...they didn't like the low humidity and 80 to 90 degree weather we can often get in the middle of winter (caused by hot, dry Santa Ana Wind conditions).

This has been in bloom since late February. It will go dormant by end of May, then come back again late August. Very colorful

It lives through snow?

16 Apr, 2017

yes, they do bloom in the snow at times, if it's not a hard freeze.

17 Apr, 2017

Even when it's buried in snow?

20 Apr, 2017

Well, sometimes it gets buried

20 Apr, 2017

And it still flowers?

20 Apr, 2017

Yes, they are very tolerant of cold weather. I mean a late winter snow or early spring snow - not an arctic freeze or deep freeze. They go dormant in Summer.

20 Apr, 2017

To me, I would think the snow would flatten them! LOL!

20 Apr, 2017

It does seem odd to see them popping up out of the snow.

It's incredible to me that anything grows in snow! LOL! I've never lived anywhere where snow falls during winter. Low elevations of Hawaii (where I'm from) and California are not known for snow. lol! :>))

I know it sounds strange, but that's exactly I"ve seen them do. I'm ready to pack my bags and go West.

22 Apr, 2017

Yes, come West young man! LOL!

27 Apr, 2017

LOL I will get there sooner or later. just wait!

That's funny! I'm always trying to get my friends in Boston to come here. They're always complaining the weather is too cold in winter.

30 Apr, 2017

lol I only visit Boston in Summertime. Their winters are worse then mine, but it's a great city to visit - so much history. The lobster rolls & clam chowder alone are worth the visit.

Before, I never had a reason to visit San Diego, but since you invited me, I will let you know when I plan to visit. I would like to meet you and do something fun together- visit that butterfly garden you told me about or some fun place. I have a lot going on now preventing me. When I get myself sorted, I'll work it out. It's time. lol

Yes, I could never live in Boston. I know it's a beautiful, historical city;however, it's way too cold! I don't even like the cold weather here in San Diego! LOL!

If you ever come to San Diego, you are definitely invited to my house to see the garden and I can be your tour guide. I've played tour guide in San Diego so many times before. :>))
