they weren't kidding when they called it a miniature crocus!

they weren't kidding when they called it a miniature crocus!

I've no idea how this caught my eye! used a 2p coin to give some sense of scale. This is one of the "Sainsbury splurge" bulbs which should have been planted Sept-Dec but didn't go in till late Feb, so that might be a reason why it looks a bit titchy

lol i took my kneeling pad out when I went to take pics, but ended up lying flat to get this close. maybe it's not had enough time to build up reseres to make it as big as the othe corucuses (croci?) - if so, it'll only be extra special this first year

Small but perfectly formed :)

it looks the same as, but a lot smaller than, some of the other crocuces, which makes me think it's not being planted at the right time, it's not had the time to build energy. but if it doesn't wear itself out this year, it should be fine next (she said with her fingers crossed). This will probably the the same for all the late-planted bulbs I put in.

Just about made it Fran, that crocus. I found a pack of small narcissus bulbs hanging in the shed recently. Trowelled them under a perennial geranium. Next year they should brighten up that dull corner. New bulbs and old ones that are fed have their own built in energy. One thing about popping them under another tolerant plant is you don't slash them by accident when hoeing or planting something else.

That's true, Dorjac. I'm going to have to be ever so careful in some of the bds. I've put the bulbs I lifted under a shrub which has a thin border, so no probs there, but the others are in on their own, bare soil, sort of thing - but then I'll know, or should remember, that there's bulbs in here.

I need to clear up under the extablished srubs - there are some bulbs under some of them (and maybe more that haven't come up yet) but they could be better arranged, spread out a bit more. At the moment I can't get close enough to see what's bulb coming up and what's weed - only way is to lift 'em and see what's got a bulb on the end! that's what I've been doing to the beds: if it's got roots, i assume it's a weed - it's been at least six months since the property became empty, so anything that small couldn't have been deliberately planted.
