Oooooh, what is it? Beautifu! Miracle :)
P.S. Today in GC I noticed discounted small boxes each containing bulb of Amaryllis. From one of those boxes sticked out long leaves so I bought this poor chappie and planted it in a pot. Will see if I have flower in ten days, as you :)

I love these - nice smell too

28 Dec, 2012

they grow like rockets kat, possibly from the narcissus family? and yes paul they do have quite a nice scent too.

i also have an amaryllis kat ~ i was given it for christmas, got it out of the box today to find a stalk of 5 inches long with a large bud but growing downwards!!! I think it was trying to escape ~ be interesting to see how long it takes to grow upwards now?

So beautiful!

28 Dec, 2012

Sticki! Are you watching The Scottish National Trail on BBC 2? Stunning!

28 Dec, 2012

Sticki@do not worry, it will start to grow upwards again. Plants are different characters, then people.
That is why I do gardening :)

28 Dec, 2012

thanks karen, no!!!! we have racing legends on bbc2 :-(( do you reckon i can watch via the computer? or maybe have to wait for iplayer?

28 Dec, 2012

28 Dec, 2012

now i want to get my boots on and be walking!

28 Dec, 2012

Very pretty Sticki, never seen so many flowers on one stem.

28 Dec, 2012

thanks lulu! there do seem to be quite a few! but its the speed that they grow i find most incredible!

how is the water level round you?

28 Dec, 2012

Oh, Goodness, Sticki, I can smell that perfume from here - delightful and makes me think of spring. I'll swear we have already noticed the lengthening days here, but it could just be wishful thinking!

28 Dec, 2012

Keep wishing gattina! It might really work that way!

28 Dec, 2012

LOL! Beautiful sunny morning just breaking, but Soooo Cold! The air smells lovely out there, though. I'm using my imagination to put notes of spring blossom in there, too. We noticed speedwell in flower yesterday on our walk, which surprised us - they don't usually show their faces 'til March. More snow coming next week, though. Bbrrrrrrr!

29 Dec, 2012

Too early yet for the sun here but looking at the clouds I don't think we have a hope of seeing any sun today, windy too.
Obviously I should have wished more!

There are bulbs starting to poke up through the soil outside, it's been relatively mild so far?

29 Dec, 2012

We have had a couple of bouts of snow so far, which is quite normal for us, and another flurry is expected on Thursday, but in between times it's often bright and relatively mild. I spend all my time "fleecing" and "unfleecing" my precious UK-bought plants. We asked one of our farming neighbours yesterday if he thought we were going to get any really bad, heavy snow this winter, and he said "Of course!" and when we asked when, he said gloomily "Just when you think you won't!" Really helpful. We still have some bulbs growing rather optimistically strongly. February and March are often the coldest months here, and it'd be nice to think that we could look forward to a mild and sunny January like the last one, but the forecast is for clouds and sporadic rain for the next 10 days, with a little sunshine thrown in for good measure. No really low temperatures on the horizon yet. We hear that England has already broken the "wetness" records this year, and we still have three days to go! 2013 HAS to be better for you. I have my fingers crossed.

it's very nice one Sticki:) I am just waiting for my Hippeastrum/Amarylis to open:) Have to grab the camera and take a pic:)
And you're right - it is a daffodil/narcissus:)

29 Dec, 2012

thanks kasy ~ hope you had a nice christmas, all the very best for the new year.

my amarylis is now at a 90 degree angle!! hopefully it will eventually point skywards?

29 Dec, 2012

it was nice and quiet Sticki:) Happy New Year to you too:)
mine has the tendency to lean towards the light on the windowsill so I keep turning it 180 degree every morning:) hopefully yours will be nice and straight soon:)

29 Dec, 2012

i will let you know! its pointing at me at the moment in the hope it will grow towards the light and make it straighter! poor little thing, being trapped in a box!

29 Dec, 2012

Very Beautiful Sticki:-)))

29 Dec, 2012

Water level is ridiculous!!

29 Dec, 2012

oh no! keep safe lulu, take care

29 Dec, 2012

Lovely flowers, do they smell nice? Our bulbs are just breaking the soil surface. It's a wonder they haven't rotted with all the rain we've had.

30 Dec, 2012

Thanks Linda, they do have a scent which is quite nice, but one that I don't think would be universally liked?
I can see little shoots of bulbs coming up in the garden even the white on a snowdrop, but it's not out yet!

30 Dec, 2012

They have a heavenly scent and guess what, they remond me of the Scillies - no surprise there then!
Thank you so much.

Thanks wildrose, always good to have a nice reminder like that. I want to plant yellow flag irises to remind me of the Hebrides!!

30 Dec, 2012

A New Year Resolution then - at least it is one that you can keep!

30 Dec, 2012

yes, thats a good idea ~ thanks WR ~ i shall put it on the calendar!

30 Dec, 2012

Very pritty Sticki has it more than one head on it ?

31 Dec, 2012

in the picture you can just see one head, each of the three bulbs had a head of flowers, they seem to have 8 flowers per stem!
thanks sue

31 Dec, 2012

Love them Sticki! Even the name is beautiful....:o))

31 Dec, 2012

Thanks janey, I like them because they look so fresh and clean and new especially as they flower in the dark winter months.

1 Jan, 2013

So pretty. I love to grow them with my kindergarten class, as they grow so quickly and flower so easily. Yours is lovely. It reminded me to buy some bulbs for tomorrow, as we have to go back to school. It has been so relaxing to just kick back and loaf for the last 10 days...

I never thought to grow these with children ~ didnt know about them till recently but what a good idea ~ i took pictures of this one growing ~ with the ruler beside it!!

hope the new term goes well

My favourite year group is 1 but I like children of all ages! I'm just not clever or quick enough to teach older ones, I enjoy the creative side and imagination but I also love seeing that rewarding moment when a child has grasped something new.

1 Jan, 2013

I love being the one that teaches them for the first time, and you are so right about being rewarded when they get it! They still love you when they are 5 and 6 year olds. Christmas is my favorite time of the year with them. We "travel" to other countries and learn the customs, traditions and foods.

1 Jan, 2013

thats a really lovely theme to use! teaching by themes is magical i think! so much to learn from so many different and fascinating topics

we had one theme of 'chocolate' ~ i loved that one! so much to learn from it ~ maths, writing, reading, history etc etc and of course a trip to Cadbury World!! a few miles down the road for us!

1 Jan, 2013

We do share a lot in common. Teaching with themes is the only way to teach! How sweet that you live so close to Cadbury World, what an awesome culmination!

2 Jan, 2013

Well, I'm gobsmacked, Sticki! How come you didn't mention Cadbury's when I stayed with you? - we did flippin' garden centres instead!!!!! ;o)

2 Jan, 2013

very tempting Readby

whooooooops sorry gattina, im sure i mentioned it but probably dismissed as i know from experience you would be queuing behind 5 coach loads [minimum] of school children and they dont give much chocolate away!

next time?

2 Jan, 2013

Oh I'm up for that! :o)))))))

3 Jan, 2013

ok then ~ dont say i havent warned you!!

3 Jan, 2013

Of course, it's going to cut across a lot of very good intentions!

3 Jan, 2013

I don't have such good intentions, gave up years ago!
