Happy watermellon seeds!

Happy watermellon seeds!

This is tonight's photo of my organically grown Mellon plants. The mama plant produced some seeds that had really taken off despite the extreme heat and drought that we are having here in Texas.
The area was prepped with Texas green sand and Rabbit Hill Farms earthworm castings before the seeds were planted and I have added shredded native tree trimmings as a mulch to keep the soil temperature cooler. This weekend, they received a generous amount of dried coffee grounds and crushed egg shells to get those microbes in the soil fired up. The new seedlings are about 5 inches tall now, and looking very healthy! Apparently, the combination of trace mineral rich sand and nutrient rich compost set up a perfect "seed to soil contact condition" that promoted outstanding germination of the test seeds. The intense 100deg + days have not phased the newbies yet, which surprises me. Most of my other plants are struggling a tad..
We'll see what happens!
