Same time...same place...must be the progeny of last year's beauty.

This argiopes is this years generation of spiders who have lived in this particular part of my garden for many years now... They mate late in the season and die with the frost, leaving a well protected egg case to ensure the next generation. I wonder if she would over-winter if she could find a warm winter den? In warmer climes these spiders can live for years...(see bugguide)

These are the most interesting spiders I've ever seen in my garden, Janette. Found her egg case...on a little spruce tree right beside my driveway...couldn't find a more open spot, (which kind of surprises me)...but what an interesting structure..and it means that, although I haven't seen him yet, there is a male argiopes around here too!

Do they usualy make their nest,s in darker hidden places as a rule Lori ?

I had always supposed so, Janette. But this one was so obvious it took me by surprise. I've found a male in another part of the garden...the Argiopes female is very kind to her mate...she doesn't eat him like some other spiders might!

Lucky for him lol ..... Think I would have been suprised as well if I can across a nest like this .....

this is brilliant Lori, I have just taken some snaps of our Orb Web spider in the polytunnel, I'll pop them up after tea.

Janette: LOL...the yuck factor is the greatest on the face, I think. I'm thankful it wasn't in the web where it made contact with my nose or forehead! I don't mind observing spiders...just don't want to wear them!
Bizzy...will take a look, thanks!
