Schizolobium parahyba - Brazilian Fern Tree Flowers

I've never, ever seen the Brazilian Fern trees flower so late. It must be due to the very cloudy and cooler than normal temps...even though last week it was scorching hot. The strange weather is probably due to the transition from an El Nino year to La Niña. Photo taken at San Diego Zoo on July 21, 2010.

Yes, cool and wet weather is good to kill spider mites. Here in San Diego we have horrible problems with spider mites all year.
I know the weather has been very unusual all around the world. This must the effect of El Niño transitioning to La Niña so quickly.
When I was at the S. D. Zoo on this cloudy day, it was only 73 degrees F./ 23 degrees C. which is a good 10 degrees cooler than normal (for this time of year) for this area of San Diego.

This strange weather is having an effect here too - it's bl#*dy freezing here!
It may be a bit of a blessing for me though, as one of my Sollya heterophylla has red spider mite despite being outside since April. I've been able to keep it under control but not completely erradicate it, so a cold wet snap could be just what it needs!
