Addition to the Bird Feeder

Addition to the Bird Feeder

I had a big Gray Jay land on the rail and look at the old feeder and leave, so I added this tray to hold larger seed and accomodate the bigger birds. Hope to see another visit! So far the Junco is the first new visitor. (Old photo, the snow has been gone for two weeks)

It went very early, we had very little precip last winter and the spring has come weeks early. Green buds on the trees already.

Do you think it's a good thing Greenthumb?

Definitely no Michaella. We are having many problems with our climate changing to warmer conditions. Worst of all is the receding of our permafrost, an underground layer of permanently frozen ground. Our water table is based on the water not being able to escape. Without permafrost or with it receding forming underground currents, we would lose much of our water supply and our flora would die leaving just a desert in its place. The first sign would be introduction and success of species that grow when it warms rather than many of our natives that just wait until 7-8 month have passed to begin growing. Natives would be squeezed out since they would appear to start season late. Currently many species don't survive here due to the spring warming but with still significant night freezes that decimate them once they sprout. It is a bit scary, though the early warmth is appreciated. When we don't get a good snow cover to insulate it, the permafrost levels drop significantly. The garden beds will be warmer this year.
