Lovely photo's MW....you're lucky to be near Martin Mere,,,,isn't that where a 21 year old Whooper swan returned to early this year?...think he's called "The Wanderer" if I remember correctly.

That's right Philc1, many of the birds are ringed, but each bird's bill pattern is unique - like human fingerprints. Sixpence, I suppose you'd say it was a lake - it's called a mere up here - a number of lakes linked by ditches and sluices. I've included a link (map) to explain.
