Hi Terry, welcome to GoY! Hope you will find plenty here to occupy yourself! ;-) Your silver medal Dahlias look fabulous! Any tips as to how to avoid them getting torn to shreds by earwigs? All the earwigs in town seem to make a beeline to my balcony whenever I try to grow them! LOL!

Hi everyone, thank you for the warm welcome.
Hi Amblealice fancy meeting you on here lol
Crazydi nice to hear from you again,
Balcony, i use Vaseline round the the flower stem roughly half way between the top pair of leaves and the flower bud just has the bud is starting to show colour, this acts as a barrier and stops the earwigs climbing up and chewing the petals.

Thanks, Terryh, for the tip! :-) I must remember that as I collected some seeds of a chocolate leaf one a few weeks ago & I'd like to grow them on my balcony. I've stopped trying to grow them because of the earwigs. The trap of an upturned cup on a cane filled with newspaper while collecting dozens of the things every day, which I killed of course, made no difference at all. Every day I killed dozens but they still feasted on the petals. Do you think they have "favourite" plants? The plants in question were white cactus type.

To an earwig a dahlia is just a meal of flower petals, i have different dahlia varieties and they would eat all of them if given the chance.
