"Orchid" Yet Another Gift!

"Orchid" Yet Another Gift!

we had a visit today from Chris, he is the brother of Steve our dear friend who sadly died earlier this year. Chris came to thank us both for our friendship and bought me this beautiful Orchid, I have never had one before but will cherish it in Steves memory, so anyone out there with tips on how to care for it , I would love to hear from you! It is presently on the window sill in our conservatory.

I have an old orchid book which I picked up from Homebase charity box written in 1954 as old as me he he. it say s they like equal sunlight not direct sun light though, they like to be watered with out sitting in water as it rots the roots, feed once a month with orchid feed and they love to be sprayed especially the white tenderals they also love to be in amongst other plants as it give an atmosphere for them, water with warm water too. Let water run through not to sit in water. I have two of these and they are very good on flowering, mine has just started to flower again both of them. That was a lovely present to buy you it will reward you well lovely orchid

Lovely gift .. youre obviously a special lady to receive such nice gifts .

Morganas advice better than I could give as some people spend years specializing in them. I think they grow similar to air plants as they often grow off other host plants so her advice about over watering would make a lot of sense .

Next door neighbour has one and she allows it to dry out before misting as Morgana explained.

You are a lovely person to know Carole , the orchid is a special gift , I know people who have them and they all claim that they do nothing ' cos the plants don't need any attention and that they thrive on neglect , I don't believe them , I have had a couple over the years and mine have died on me ... , I hope you get the right advice and you admire it for many years to come .. :o)

This type Carole has got is a good flowering one I have had mine for years and recently bought another which turned out to be the same I have another 4 which have not reflowered as of yet but this one always flowers. When the flower dies off you should cut down to the first 2 nodes from the bottom. Refresh the fur bark mix when it needs it.

Hi PP, I also got given one a few years ago for a great deed my husband did for our next door neighbour she'd locked herself out, But there was a fan light window open which he had to reach in and open the main window up stairs.
The following day she appeared at the door with this orchid,I'd never had one in my life !! I know have 6. Most of them are on the kitchen window sill facing south. They do like some gravel in the bottom of the pots, water from the bottom a lot of people say soak them dont this rots them if your not carefull. Once the flowers have finished which will be a long time yet give it a fed.
Mine have flowered and flowered if I have time over the weekend I'll put some pictures up for you.
Beautiful colour PP, do hope this helps you.

That's a lovely orchid. Very much like one that I have. I have had it for two years and it has flowered three times in that period. Each time it has more flowers and they last for months. Morgana is right about how to look after them. Mine has finished flowering and has thrown out a new shoot full of buds. This is the first time it has shown a new shoot, but the other three look quite lifeless. I'm not sure what to do about the old shoots. Also I don't know whether to re-pot it or how. I know the roots have their own unique ways of growing up and out of the pot, but mine seems to have so many. Any tips?
