Ha ha ha - made me laugh that! I had a very serious disscussion with my dad about whether our bird box should have a perch outside the hole - he said, what will they land on to get in the hole? And I said, there are no convenient perches outside holes in trees! It ended in stalemate.....

Can't resist getting in on this one!... I'm making birdhouses too at present and the reason for no perches (according the 'experts' is that it provides a convenient and stable perch for other larger birds to raid the nest) I made mine with just a ledge below the hole and even at that the starlings were able to harrass the poor sparrows, seizing the nestlings through the hole that was small enough that the starlings could only get their heads in. Imagine the carnage if they were able to get right into the nest! And that's the reason why the holes are a certain diameter for small birds and sparrows etc... I laughed as well envisioning the divebomb approach...but if you watch you will observe that they apply the airbreaks and land feet first on the rim of the hole...lol. You're a primo landlord, looks like cable is included in the rent!!!

when i was 9 i found a bird box at the tip... i got all my toys from there hehehe (not really) It had a perch but i didn't realise what that was for and proceeded with my ladder and hammer to put up the bird box! as i was admiring my work i looked around to my mum collasped laughing! I had thought the perch was for danging fat balls from and had hung it upside down! oh well at least i tried!!
