starter trees

starter trees

various starter bonsai including a sickly looking rhododendron (grown from a cutting) which actually has a new shoot and will be fine I think.... the small acacia group are my challenge as the only bonsai I lost last winter was an acacia so I am determined to put that right this year!

I found a very small oak seedling on the road a few months ago. I brought it home and was thinking of making it into a bonsai tree.

do it Blodyn! They are slow to grow due to the conditions, but it is very rewarding.... grab a book or 2 from the library or look online, there's loads of help out there...

I'm also a member of bonsaitreeforums.com which is a very informative site. There's usually someone there who can answer any bonsai questions from, " I've never grown a bonsai before and don't know what to do." to "I've been growing bonsai for thirty five years and I recently came across this problem. Can anyone help?".
Another good bonsai site is: www.bonsi4me.com

With regards to your oak, Blodyn, I hope it has survived the transplant as they can be difficult to collect from the wild. If it hasn't, don't be put off.

Rockspray Cotoneaster is a good one to start with. Hardy, drought resistant, can take abust from inexperienced growers, has tiny leaves, tiny white/pink flowers, tiny red berries, red autumn colours, can be grown in any style except formal upright, close internodes between leaves, will backbud on old wood. Cor! until I wrote this I didn't realise just how suitable this shrub is for bonsai. I've got a photo on my page, check it out and see what is possible with this shrub.
ps. I don't mean to blow my own trumpet, but I'm proud of it. This is one of my first or second I collected. Don't buy a bonsai. look around the garden and choose any shrub, tree or seedling with small leaves and start from there.
