Clematis Photographs in Garden at the moment

It is cold, windy, very light rain on and off, so thought I would cheer myself up with some picture taking.

Here are some of the Clematis which are flowering at the moment:

I wonder how many my gardening friends can name them, bet Karen Sue knows them all:
Have a go just a bit of fun as they say on the bbc. no prizes:

The problem with digital photography, I have found is that the colour is never quite what it looks like in real life – so these first two might be a bit misleading for you all, well may be not the white one, but the other is darker in reality.

The first two sit side by side on the fence panel of my chicken run, they do look a picture at the moment, there is a third one which is later flowering to the left of the first one, so I am hoping to get some more colour a little later on this fence panel.

Three more to have a guess at, the third one not so good a picture as I got the camera too close to the flower and it always blurs the picture. Think you might know it anyway.

Three more – they are lovely, as not much else in the garden just at the moment, apart from lots of aquilegias, so these give height and colour at this time of year which is always a bonus whilst waiting for the real flower display.

This is the last one, and I have only taken a picture of this from the back of the plant as…………. the thrushes have returned and built another nest in the front of this clematis, which has dozens of flowers on it, but now is the proud owner of a thrushes des rez.

Had to do something with my time, and it beats dusting and vaccuuming any day. It is far too cold and grey to be outside in the garden working, hope you enjoy. I am off for a warm drink now, it is quite cold out there.

Think the four one is Nelly Moser I have one that I bought this year they all look lovely Oliveoil:)

Having similar weather to you Barbara, had to put the heater on for a bit, the rain hardly wet the top of the soil.
Your pictures have definitely cheered me up because the rain did not stay long enough :((((

The only one of these that I can definitely put a name to is Niobe! (in the penultimate pic) It's so hard to tell unless you grow them yourself because as you say..colours not always as you see them. What is the last one Mum, it is absolutely gorgeous...oh, now is it Pink Champagne? I seem to remember IDing that one last year....

Yes Karen you are right on that one and Niobe. As last year it has lots of flowers on it, now the Thrushes have returned to the garden and built another nest in it, it is a beautiful nest so round and so deep, hoping for more babies in that. Still not seen them feeding the fledglings though, we think something must have taken them from the nest now. Sammie said she had seen a Polecat in the garden, the nest was fairly low down so maybe it took them out of their nest. I hope not, we have had a live catcher/trap down to try and catch the brute but no more sightings of it. Paul did ask her if she had been on the bottle when she saw it. lol.

Michaella not enough rain just like you it has only just dampened the top soil, very windy but it has warmed up slightly.

A pole cat!? Wow!

Sorry Nana d not Nelly Moser, haven't got a Nelly, but it does look fairly similar.

Helenium don't worry, I would not have known any of their names either if I had not had the labels with them. lol. I am hopeless at names of things. Karen is able to recall all latin names and I never know which is which. lol. I blame old age lol.

Sammie was excited, we were not, they kill a bit like foxes do, for the fun of it.

I keep on telling her Aileen, nothing to do with age, I just happen to love the names, they interest me! ANyway, I often can't recall them. Last night I couldnt remember the name of Alchemilla Mollis for the life of me!

These are beautiful Oliveoil ...you certainly have a way with clematis !

I have been practising for a while Judy, without I must say a lot of success. They are growing nicely now, well the majority of them are, one or two still not doing very well though. Think the trick is to get the right one in the correct place for it. They all have different requirements, which I found out the hard way, the ones I like the most didn't like the garden soil and I didn't realise that wind upset some of them more than others, so it is a huge learning curve, still am learning. Karensue has taught me a lot about Clematis, hers are stunning. I have now taken a leaf out of her book and am trying to grow them through bushes and shrubs to add interest. This site is also very very good for advice on all plants and their requirments.

I rarely remember the names, have to say I`m better since coming on here though..
They are lovely Olive and how great to have the thrushes building in your garden, lets hope the polecat doesn`t return, I`ve never heard of that happening before......
Still no rain here, very windy today again but slightly warmer so gardening was on the agenda here........

Very cold here today, not been out and it has spitted and spotted, but not really rained until we had a shower at about 6pm think it has stopped now, not really rained for weeks. It is more like April than May, showers if you can call them showers, it wets the paths and dries straight away. We are desperate for proper rain, the clouds are there but the wind is blowing it over very quickly.

Lovely clematis Olive must say the only one I recognised was Niobe because I have this but it isnt in flower as yet.
Wish I could send you some rain, we have had quite a lot of heavy showers all my three rain barrels are full, it now just keeps spitting now and then and is very overcast windy and quite cool at times with the odd bit of sunshine thrown in.

A beautiful selection,Oliveoil,,and they all so prolific .you must have so much patience,to keep tryng to provide the right position for them, and soil..I though they all liked the same ...shows what I know..but then again,I only have one.:o)

16 May, 2011

I don't have patience Bloomer if they curl up their toes they stay curled up, lol. I do not replace them, but I have learned to read advice and instructions on plant labels it does help doesn't it lol. amazing what a little education can do for one isn't it!!
Pleased you recognised Niobe, it is I think my favourite ever, it is such a rich velvety colour. I new that side of the country was getting the wet weather, I keep an eye on it each morning, OH is groundsman (sports field) and he needs to know what the weather is going to do each day.

16 May, 2011

They are all beautiful but i couldn't name any of them lol.
It is so cold !!!!! :o(((((
If you want to have a close up photo just take it from a distance and crop the picture to get rid of the background. That's what i do. My hands are never steady enough to take a proper close up lol

Lovely selection of Clems. ... I love the first pic with so many blooms .. beautiful! : o )

16 May, 2011

thanks for the tip Hywel, thanks Shirley, right here goes, the names are
1 Warsaw Nike
2 Wilsonii
3 Both the first two together the picture doesn't do them justice.
4 Candy Stripe
5 Fair Rosamund
6 Hagley Hybrid, not a good picture, blurred
7 Westerplatte
8 Niobe
9 Pink Champagne

I love Niobe, think that is my all time favourite, it is the rich colour I like.
but after saying that for performance, Warsaw Nike is top of the charts
Pink Champagne, because it is always so cheerful comes next
and the rest have just started to perform so they all deserve a well done vote for effort. lol. Fair Rosamund has lots of flowers this year, never done much before, Only 3rd year though so I probably am expecting a lot from her. But after saying that Warsaw Nike is only on its second year and she seems to keep going for ages, it is a lovely deep rich colour.
Hope you are not all too cold this evening, I am off to my bed, had computer trouble and have been trying to sort it out all night. Thanks for looking at the clematis - Goodnight

Beautiful picturesand selection. Must be nice to have them flowering all over. I'm yet to get the hang of clematis (ot climbers that aren't Ivy or Jasmin), but working on it and trying to have patience :-)

17 May, 2011

You will get there Columbine, I have, lol. :O)

17 May, 2011

lovely clems barbara and so colourfull, mine taking their time, no sun just cloud and rain.

17 May, 2011

It is a bit like that here - over the weekend, clouds and wind but not a lot of rain, just drizzle now and then. We are desperate for a good shower (only overnight though). Sun did make in an appearance yesterday, it warmed up slightly, which is a good thing, it was bitterly cold at cricket on Saturday, I had to have layers of clothing on and was still frozen. Ah well that is England for you.
