Some you win......some you lose.....

Hi all!

Well, I’m currently in the middle of a loooong 2 weeks at work with little time off and late nights agogo – I’ll survive! Having a day off today and feeling absolutely knacke…….very tired, I decided to have a lazy day in front of the box catching up on 2 episodes of Doc Martin – brilliant – and some Masterchefs, all of which we’d recorded. Ali has been at a big craft exhibition in Cardiff and is currently out with her boy having taking him and his lady food shopping. So, about half hour or so ago, I thought I’d get 2 jobs done before it goes completely black overhead and starts raining!

The first job was not one I was looking forward to. I posted a question some days ago about the condition of my Aeonium. It has been flourishing but I noticed last week that the plant had tilted to one side and when I pushed it gently, it just bobbed from side to side as though there was not much strength in it. Anyway, on the advice of Sandra, who has knowledge on these types of plants, I took the thing out of the pot to check on the root system. She basically said that, as Bamboo had suggested, it may be me being too nice to it, as they tend to throw kindness back in your face – gratitude for you! – but, if the root clump just crumbled away, it could well be the dreaded vine weevil…..

This is how my little Tubby looked a few weeks after I rescued him from the half-price shelf at the GC, looking a tad dishevelled:

This was it this morning:

And after I had removed it, very easily I may add, from it’s pot:0(

If Sandra, or anyone else who knows, can tell me if the following pics are of the vine weevil? There was no root system of any description really and probably explains the fragility of the plant on the top of the pot…..

I’m guessing that someone will confirm it’s bad news for me! Ah well, he had a good, albeit, short life. Gutted though as I really liked him.

Moving onto the second task which was to cut back my Barbera Windsor Fuschia – ooh, luvverly bubbly – and re-pot it ready for the GH for winter. It had stopped flowering as aggressively as it has been so it seemed a good a time as any to get the job done. Hopefully , I’ve done it correctly and not been too aggressive on my cutting back ……Sanbaz?

When I was walking to the GH to get my cutters, I hadn’t realised that I had a little visitor scurrying all over the place…..

’Can’t stop mate, I’m competing in the Squirrel Krypon Factor. First round – Assault Course!’

Round one complete…..time for food!

A quick burst of colour to brighten an otherwise dreary day – weatherwise that is……

My FREE pot of Violas from the GC, which I picked up over a week ago…

One of my successes of my short time as a novice in the garden this summer is the Brunnera – Jack Frost, which some of you may remember was all but shrivelled to nothing and a virtual goner just a montha or so ago. On the advice of Youngdaisydee, I removed it from the pond area, re-potted it and placed it in a little half-shady spot under the conifers. Then, on the advice of Sanbaz, I cut it right back to stop all the dead leaves/stems, taking the nutrients.

Well, some you do apparently win and I was so chuffed to see this sight earlier:

Finally, a while back, I posted some pics on my photo’s and mentioned that Ali wanted one or two of them on canvas. Well, I had one done for each of us in Tesco and here are the results:

*My choice….

Ali’s choice…*

The nicest part is knowing that you took the original photo’s!!

And how was your day………?

Oooh your Canvas's look Double Fantastic, Amazing OB, I might try this myself..
About your Aoneum, what are we looking at, if its the white bits, looks like grit to me, these like grit to rest on, or its plantfood, GCs always add it, The offsets can be planted up. Loads of free plants there OB.. I would pot the mother plant up again and place grit on top of the pot to rest its head on :)))

Another great blog Dan, lovely pics of the squirrel, was he posing for you? Didn't know you could get your pics put on canvas at Tesco, what a wonderful idea and unique to you.
As to the vine weevil, it's hard to tell from the photos. Are the white bits small C shaped grubs (about 1/4" across) with brown/orange at one end or are they bits of perlite? I think you saw the pic of the adult in my blog but it is the grubs which do the damage. The grubs are usually obvious. Maybe the roots just rotted from overwatering - too much TLC! lol

Great blog O.B. :)) Just love those canvases....can I be really really cheeky, and ask how much they cost to be put on canvas?? I'd love to have some done for christmas presents....
As for the Aeonium, I would say pot it up again in gritty compost, and go easy on the watering. The white things look like perlite to me (used for improving the drainage in compost) rather than vine weevil grubs... but then my eye-sight isn't one of my better features, lol....

Great blog oddbillies striking canvases.

Hey OB...your white things there don't look like vine weevil grubs...I had them take over an old white kitchen sink I had planted up & they are maggoty looking b*****s with a dark end & the older ones have legs! They ate all my succulents from the bottom so like you I knew something was up as the plant just came away with no roots or anything!
They are creamy colour too whereas your pics shows bright white stuff, as the others say like pearlite. Have I convinced you? Lol!!
Other than that...your Jack Frost & your colourful pots look great....& I love your squizzle...he's so cute!
I didn't know what you could do at Tesco with the canvas pics...could I ask how much that costs? Me 'n' Crazydi wanna know! ;0)

i cant see any of the little b*******s but all is not lost. plenty of cuttings to give you new plants. i use a gritty sandy mix of compost. snip each one off and put into pots. they will soon root and give you lovely new plants.
love the canvas prints..;-))

See! If you'd done them yourself you could be rolling in garden money!

Asda do Canvas too, 3 sizes as i remember but it wasn't cheap :(

Thanks all! Such kind comments from everyone.

Marie: How would I go about doing my own though? I assume I'd have to buy frames, printable canvas and then a printer that will print onto canvas?

I think you're all right about the plant food thing and I'm now thinking it probably was over watering that has rotted the roots. I will try what Sandra has advised and repot tsome of the smaller shoots and see what happens. Thanks for all your advice and thank goodness it's not those 'orrible b******s!!

The canvases are NOT cheap in all honesty. These 2 are slightly smaller than A4 but cost nearly £48 for the 2. I had promised Ali one and couldn't then say no, but next time I'm gonna have prints done as they are far cheaper. Ali thinks I should put some of pics in clip frames around my little office here. She's already picked up 2 frames from Wilko's fro 99p each so will get some done soon!

They do much larger canvases for £50 but it can get very expensive. Won't do them again, nice as they are!

Thanks again all:0)-

Yes San, really chuffed with the Brunnera and it's all down to you and Dee. I've learnt so much these past few, short months but still have a tendancy to 'panic' a little when really I should just be content to let nature take it's course and ask on here if I'm not sure.

Looking forward to my week off in a week and a bit and already have my agenda pretty much planned for the garden. Have to go to a meeting on the Thursday but don't mind as I'm usinfg that day at xmas when for the first time in over 15 years, I shall be having more than just xmas day off! I am having 4, luxurious days from xmas eve to the day after boxing day. Back in on 28th!! It will be like heaven as I will actually be able to relax for once AND, have a drink on xmas day without thinking of work the next day!

Anyway, hope the fuschia's work out for me. Already in the GH so we keep an eye on them. Thanks again San:0)

Enjoyd your blog, and your little visitor is lovely. Your canvases look stunning too.

Does the squirrel pinch your bulbs Dan? we used to have one around here and I lost hundreds without knowing why, mind you I`d love it if one came back, love to watch them. Your canvasses look smashing and make them extra special knowing they are your own pics...

Funnily enough Lincs, I noticed tonight, when I was doing all the above things, that he may have been inmy half barrel tub with my Autumn bulbs in. Just a couple of little indentations in the soil but nothing taken as yet. I've tried covering it over now with some picket fence to hopefully dissuade him/them. They are already poking through so hopefully, they will be established shortly and they will be left to flourish alone!!

Hope Morgan is feeling better soon. Such a beautiful looking dog!

Thanks for your comments on the canvasses. You too Gee!

An interesting blog on a subject that affects most of us. Does anyone know when is the best time to sterilize the soil to eradicate the little blighters?

16 Oct, 2009

And HOW to sterilise it??

16 Oct, 2009

You do take some grand photos! Don't you just bake the soil to sterilize it? Or if ground, cover with plastic to solarize?

17 Oct, 2009

Oh if only! we don't get enough sun here Orqratis. I have an electric sterilizer but it would take months to do all I need. I use something called Amatillox but I don't know if I should use it now or late winter.
