It's all about the roses...

It’s been a long week at work but I do love my Friday nights. Feels like a special night where technically it’s still part of the week but the promise of the whole weekend lies ahead.

My afterwork wander round the garden rewarded me with roses…pinks and corals and orange. So beautiful and delicate where my usual dahlia love is because they are so in your face and showy…these are tiny folds and variances in colour. And the smell ! It’s just the most heady perfume…I think my cries of ‘smell this’ are getting old as the teenagers have retreated to their rooms and OH is reading anything he can get his hands on to avoid me lol.

Gardening has helped me discover all my senses…from seeing the colours and smelling the roses, to touching the soft down on the poppy buds and the prickles on the leaves of my mimosa….tasting the courgettes and peppers and even listening to the breeze rustling through the trees…it’s given me an overwhelming thought of ’I’m doing this, and I’m doing ok’

:)

So where is your black spot!!! Lol. They look really good. I never used to be into roses but now I am totally sold on them, who cares if they attack me with their thorns. This gardening thing is a bit addictive :-).

I can see why you love your Roses,Nat..they are beautiful, and yes,you are definitely doing more than ok..my family 'switch off' too, when I enthuse about my garden and plants..they just don't get it,do they ? poor souls :o)

I know what you mean! In my case it is my type of gardening as everything is more or less established.
Your roses are splendid and I especially like the apricot-coloured one. (Azaleas that colour are also my favourites.)
We can't grow roses for some reason though, oddly, when our daughter was discarding a red rose we gave it garden-room, not expecting it to grow. It has surprised us with its vigorous growth and lovely red bloom. There's a Green Man nearby and I do bury the occasional banana skin amongst the roots. Maybe they are the reason.
I'm sure I've said all that in another post. If so, apologies!

What on earth is black spot Jen ?? Is that something I'm supposed to look for ?

What do you all do to get your gardening fix in the winter ? My mums already talking about putting some of her beds to sleep. I don't know what that means either lol.

You are right Stera, I'm loving the experience....family not so much Bloomer ! Lol

Any you bury banana skins by your roses ? Interesting Eirlys.

Everyday is a school day :)

black spot is a fungal disease of roses. as the name suggests you find black spots about the size of a 1p coin on the leaves. you haven't got any sign of it so don't worry.

the idea of putting beds to sleep means as they finish for the year the dead stems are cut down and the garden all tidy etc, but I have plants that flower in the winter. as for what you can do there is the planning and dreaming as well as any tree removal or hard landscaping or shed/fence painting to do.

if you have a greenhouse then there is a whole new world of things to do in there.

so glad all senses are now firing on full cylinders. the roses look great too.

Long time ago I was told to bury about 4 banana skins under a rose when planting it & continue to chuck the skins round them as & when. They are said to be rich in potassium which they release as they break down.

Black spot is a fungal disease of roses, it starts as black spots which spread, the leaf turns yellow & falls off.
Your roses look lovely & healthy but watch out for it & spray with TopRose every 2 wks. It's also important to pick up & burn every fallen leaf as the fungus spores overwinter in the soil.

Sorry I was only joking. Yours look really healthy. Black spot was one of the reasons I never used to like roses. In my last garden my roses really suffered with it. Here, some of the roses that where already here had it really badly but alot better as I now spray with rose clear ultra.

You really are doing ok Nat and I'm not surprised you think you have gained all your senses, its a good feeling wandering around seeing and smelling the joys in a garden, I can see my hubby and daughters eyes glazing over when I'm trying to chat gardening with them, however my youngest daughter has the same love of her garden as I have so we share and compare, she only lives around the corner from us so plants do go backwards and forwards, lol.
I do have two g'houses so winter months I still have things to care for, even if its only going down and checking them over, otherwise I now have what I always call my armchair gardening, that means being on the web, searching and planning for the coming season ( catching up on photo's on here, never seems to work, miles behind always) Autumn seems to have arrived early so not surprised your mum is preparing her beds and suchlike...

Well done Nat! I love my roses. I get the black spot every year. I spray them as soon as they break bud in spring..every 2 weeks. But the weather since end May has been dire here and so spraying has been curtailed. Its either been wet, or windy, or both. Consequently the spot is returning. Its just something Rose growers usually have to live with.

Don't we all love roses, yours are beautiful

re Bananas: I read somewhere that if you bury banana skins near rose roots it helps the plant grow. Must be the potassium.

Your roses are beautiful. I'm glad you've come to enjoy your garden :)

Eirlys: I read that too and that's where all my banana skins go. lol

Beautiful roses - I can't choose a favorite - all of them.
