January Surprise

I’d not been taking too much notice of what’s around in the garden – too busy after a couple of weeks travelling and visiting family over Christmas and New Year – then discovering that the neighbours’ sheep had dined out on our sprouts! But this morning I stopped and took stock of what was around me: bulbs planted in the new bed had started poking up out of the soil; the Alegria (Busy Lizzies) had succumbed to the frost and were sodden piles of mush; same with the nasturtiums at the foot of the outside stairs. Then I looked back towards the house and looked up – and there, just beneath the balcony was the most beautiful red rose! Crimson Cascade! Not exactly a ‘cascade’ as it was only one flower, but what a glorious surprise! I imagine the proximity and protection of the balcony had allowed it to bloom, plus it being in the very place where the sun hits first thing in the morning.

Lovely rose. It's been a very odd season. I have two rudbeckia ,several calendula and 3 different roses in flower. One of the rose bushes has about 20 flowers!

I hope the weather sorts itself out soon - it's making a mockery of us gardeners!
